Research shows that the average woman owns 8 pairs of jeans. But how many of those pairs does she actually wear? I happen to own, in fact, exactly 8 pairs of jeans, and I wear, let’s see, only 3 of them: my skinny jeans from Old Navy, a pricey pair of Sergio Valentes that are dying to be re-hemmed (but I love them anyway), and, yup, another pair from Old Navy. It just goes to show that the perfect pair of jeans, as discussed in Jean Mutations this week, has nothing to do with big price tags or designer labels-why else would I bench expensive pairs from Earnest Sewn, 7 For All Mankind, and Citizens of Humanity? It’s simply a matter of finding that ideal fit, that pair that makes you feel like a supermodel the second you slip them on. Fortunately for me, that pair happens to cost only $20, not $200. But even if your perfect pair runs into the triple digits, just think of the cost-per-wear factor. You’ll wear a so-so pair of jeans maybe a dozen or so times. But a fabulous, fits-like-a-glove pair? Um, several times a week! With each wear you’re getting more value for your money, so don’t be afraid to splurge if you’ve really found true denim love. It takes a special kind of denim to give us great booties, whittle our waists, and trim our thighs-so don’t let it pass you by!
Oh, and if you’re still hesitant to shop online, I recommend the denim section at Barneys. In my experience the sales associates are great at translating your ideas (“Um, something skinny, but not hipster-skinny, in a dark wash, but not too dark…”) into a spot-on selection to take back to the dressing room.
