Duchess Digest: Feminine Leadership Is Best Spring Trend
One of my biggest guilty pleasures is sitting down on a Sunday morning with a cup of freshly brewed coffee and this month’s stack of new magazines. Properly armed with Vogue, Vanity Fair, W and my Papua New Guinea Blend, I like to leisurely bask in the fabulous photo spreads, intelligent current event articles and fabulous profiles. I love it.
However, I have been particularly busy the past few months and only realized just how busy when I saw the March issue of Vogue staring back at me from the coffee table, unopened, glossy and lonely – and it’s April! I packed up my neglected back issues post haste and headed to the beach for some R & R (that’s research and reading).
And I have to tell you of all the spring trends I saw in the magazine pages the one that struck me as the best and most exciting of the bunch are the Super Women of Spring. Yes, the super women. I’m talking about women like Michelle Obama, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and Melinda Gates. These women are gorgeous, powerful, successful, bright, fun and influential while still being mothers and wives.
I happen to have fallen in love with Carla Bruni many years ago when her soft and sultry album “Quelqu’un m’a dit” (French for “Someone told me”) was featured on NPR. Here is a woman who was a successful songwriter, singer and model (oh and single mother) before meeting and marrying the French Prime Minister last year. Then there is Melinda Gates, wife of, yes, that Gates. Melinda had a bachelors and masters before going to work for Microsoft in the late eighties. Melinda had her game wired tight before meeting and falling in love with Bill. Finally, where do I begin with our First Lady? Not only is she beautiful and charming, but she’s smart, fun and dedicated. She was Barrack’s boss and mentor at their law firm before ever being his Mrs. He has said about Michelle (which I believe is probably the nicest balance any woman could ever strike) that “She is at once familiar to me, so that I can be myself and she knows me very well and I trust her, but at the same time she is also a complete mystery to me in some ways . . . it’s that tension between familiarity and mystery that makes for something strong.”
Reading the profiles and interviews of these women makes me realize that we’ve never had a more exciting time to be women in the world. All of these women are successful, happy and accomplished in their own shoes. They are living life to its fullest and still embracing love and motherhood. Talk about having it all! We have so many amazing women who have gone before us to blaze the path to this day, where we can be amongst the greatest female role models! What a time to be alive. And what a trend, not just for spring, but for our lives.
Strong, feminine leadership.
That’s a trend that will never go out of style!
