Plastic Bottles and BPAs

Worried about cancer? If you aren’t, you should be. Particularly if you carry around a plastic water bottle, and sip on it all day long.

On a recent flight, I was sandwiched between two scientists. Making small talk, I asked one what he thought about the microwave debate. To that, he laughed. A more serious issue, he said, were the amount of BPA (Bisphenol A organic compounds) we drink, because it is found in the epoxy that lines plastic water bottles  and the hard plastic baby bottles that, for the past generation have been so ubiquitous on our grocery shelves and in our shoulder bags.

Bearing out his claim is a recent study that links BPAs to heart disease and diabetes.

Since these also end up in landfills, we now have two reasons to leave this kind of plastic out of our lives.

I also found some info in this month’s Southwest Airlines’ Spirit magazine, to support his claim. Here are a few alternatives to consider as your adult sippy cup:

New Wave Enviro Corn Resin Bottle: Made from 100 percent American corn (FINALLY! Something from corn that doesn’t end up on your hips!) this container comes with a water filter that gives you 90 refills. When you’re done, just recycle it at any commercial composting facility. It will degrade in about 80 days.  $9 on

Nalgene 16-Ounce PC Loop-Top Bottle: Made from non-leaching plastics, this bottle won’t stain, dent, or retain any smells. Plus, it is availabe in a rainbow of colors. $8 at

Klean Kanteen: More a bag than a bottle, this collapsible water holder can weigh ujp to 80  percent less than plastic bottles. But don’t let its malleability fool you. The bottle holds liquids of any temperature, from frozen to boiling. $8

Klean Kanteen: this 27-ounce stainless steel bottle comes with either a loop, flat or pop-top straw cap, and a wide mouth that allows ice cubes to slip in. Great news: holds up well in the dishwasher.  $18,

Sigg Water Bottle with Screw Top: Your eco sensibilities stay in tact with this 32-ounce leak-proof aluminum bottle, which can also carry juice and wine. Comes in more than 100 designs, and a variety of colors. $22,

Think green, drink clean,
