Sex & the Single Woman: ‘Til Death Do Us Part
When I was in high school, I worked in the dining room of a nursing home. This job may not sound too thrilling, but I really liked it. The residents were hilarious and I got a lot more out of working there than I expected.
One memory that has stuck with me through the years is of a couple who lived there. I don’t know how long they had been there, but I do know that they were beautiful.
Every night on the way to dinner, they walked through the dining hall holding hands. He would help her with her coat and pull out her chair. At dinner they always ordered the same drink–a cup of milk with two straws. The kicker for me is that they even double dated with one of the college students I worked with.
As they got older, she started to get sicker, and it was honestly heartbreaking to see. I don’t know what ever happened to them, but clearly they made quite an impression on everyone they knew.
With divorce rates so high, it’s so reassuring to see that there are still couples out there who have been married for fifty years and are still madly in love. I can only hope that I find someone who can help me have a piece of what this couple was fortunate enough to have.
