The Duchess Digest: Objects in Motion
Energy is a funny thing. It is defined as “the ability to do work.” It exists in its most basic forms as kinetic and potential. Kinetic energy is energy in motion; like heat and light. Potential energy is stored energy; like the electrical energy stored in a battery. Pretty much our entire world is governed by these two very basic forms of physics and the two basic laws that govern them (because apparently, in addition to death and taxes, the laws of thermodynamics seem to be certain as well).
The first law of thermodynamics is that energy under normal conditions can not be created or destroyed, only transformed between the two basic forms. The second law is that any time work is performed (i.e. the transfer of that energy from kinetic to potential and back again) some of the starting energy will be lost in the form of heat. In other words, energy loss happens and no process is 100% efficient. It also means that any living system will eventually break down if it’s not provided with energy inputs (because of the inefficient energy transfers).
These two laws and basic forms of energy can be very meaningful in our lives, beyond their practical scientific implications. If you feel like your life is stuck and you’re considering extra closet space for all the stored potential energy your hoarding – wait! Why not start a catalyst in your life and try out the first law of thermodynamics! Transform your life’s energy (remember it’s the ability to do work) from static to motion. Make a few calls toward that project you’ve been sitting on. Sign up for that class you’ve been wanting to take. Contact a mentor in your field. Put that motion behind your potential and feel the kinetic energy ripple through your life. Remember the old caveat that objects in motion tend to stay in motion. So get moving!
It will be like a pebble in a still pond; the ripples from your small actions will extend out in wavelengths to have you moving and shaking in no time. Sure you will build up and release some heat along the way, and yes, you won’t be 100% efficient all the time – that’s just the second law at work! Be sure to remember the other crucial aspect of the second law – that living systems break down without energy input. Be vigilant about getting the right input into your system. Make sure you are giving yourself lots of positive encouragement, surrounding yourself with enthusiastic support and community and that you are fueling your body with nutrition and sleep. You need those crucial inputs to keep your energy moving forward and to prevent system breakdown. When coupled with proper input, making little motions to start the wave of momentum will get you back in the game and moving forward in the New Year.
