Married to Your Job?

Suzy earned a reputation as a devoted, willing-to-do-anything employee. But working became her life. After she left the job at the golf school and went on to another position with a corporation, she fell into the same routine. She was not only performing her assignments; she was taking on those of some of the higher-level executives.

Then, one morning, Suzy woke up—in her 40s—and asked, “What happened?”  A wise perspective kicked in: “The more work you do, the more work you will attract. You tend to give the message, ‘She can handle anything, willingly, and enthusiastically.’ If you are like this and you do say no, it shocks people. Now, I’m a recovering workaholic.”

It’s hard to shift from investing 12 hours a day, six days a week to your job, to devoting some hours to your home and personal life. But Suzy did leave that job and began to re-prioritize her time. She is now president and owner of Tasks Unlimited. She is also Founding President of the National Association of Professional Organizers’ South Florida Chapter and spends ample time with friends, playing golf, swimming, attending sports and cultural events, movies, and parties.

Finding a Cure

Here are some take away pieces of wisdom to help you avoid workholism:

  • Do your best, while having realistic expectations of yourself.
  • Avoid letting work consume your time, mind, and soul.
  • Create a bigger plan for yourself that includes pleasure, friends, family, and self-care.
  • Don’t be the last person to leave the office at night.
  • Delegate.
  • Avoid taking on responsibilities that don’t belong to you. Say no!
  • Take a lunch break every day. If it can’t be an hour, take a half hour.
  • If you have to work on the weekend, pick one day. Never work both days.
  • Find someone emotionally safe with whom you can verbalize your concerns about workaholism.
  • Accept advice and put it into action!
  • If you work from a home office, avoid working into the night by making plans to read a book (non-work related) or go see a movie.
