Seeking Work/Life Balance

If being at the office seems to conflict with other aspects of your life, is working from home a possibility, at least on occasion?
Work/life balance also requires taking time for yourself, and maintaining your health. As a mother of three, you no doubt focus on your children’s needs, frequently to the exclusion of your own.
Does your company have an on-site exercise facility? Does it offer or subsidize health club membership? Before you say you don’t have time, remember, exercise builds energy, improves your outlook, and helps address health issues.
Also, don’t ignore the social aspect your job offers. Friendships with coworkers can be a great source of camaraderie. While you don’t want your lunch sessions to turn into therapy sessions, sharing your struggles with friends can lighten the load.
So too can participating in affinity groups that your employer may sponsor. If your employer has a working mothers group, for example, you may find support, as well as solutions, there.
What if none of these suggestions seems like enough? Then it may be time to talk to a professional counselor. If your company has an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) it likely offers some type of counseling service. If not, help may be available through your health care plan.
Why go this route?
Work/life balance isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity, particularly for a single mother with three children. You need to be at your best in order to support your family, your career, and yourself.
When you’re under extreme stress, as your use of the word “desperately” suggests, it can help to talk things out with a professional. You may be surprised to find you know what has to be done and only require affirmation in order to take the next steps.
Regardless, the fact that you’re aware there’s a problem and you’re seeking better work/life balance is a huge first step. You’re already on your way to finding a solution that can make a difference.
