Forget the cabbage patch. I’m sure I was born between the stacks of the Decatur (GA) Public Library. It was a great place for a prodigious reader such as myself to read, dream and learn.

I still make my home in my in my local library system — Marin County. It’s where I conduct the research for my books. My children know its various branches by heart: the tall leaded windows in the soft mauve Sausalito branch, where the playground outside beckons; the Mill Valley branch, located deep in the redwoods, with its large hearth fireplace; the Corte Madera branch, with its fabulous reference department; tony Tiburon-Belvedere, with its welcoming wingback chairs and lots of quiet alcoves; the Larkspur branch, cozy and friendly, as is the San Anselmo branch, in its classic town hall. Marin City branch librarians always have welcoming smiles for their patron, and the Civic Center branch is stately and always fascinating. Fairfax reflects its community: funky, friendly and full of joy.

All libraries need a financial lift.

In fact, I’ve helped organize an event, happening in on September 16, 2010, 7:30pm, in Seattle: Between the Pages will benefit the Kitsap Regional Libary Foundation, which serves the islands in Seattle Bay. It takes place on Bainbridge Island (Bainbridge Performing Arts Center, 200 Madison Ave, N).

I hope you can join me, along with Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley, and New York Times bestselling authors Eileen Goudge, Joshilyn Jackson, and Tatjana Soli for this wonderful event. We’ll be reading from our books, and answering your questions.

In order to garner attention, libraries have to get creative, too. I like the way Brigham Young University students have taken matters into their own hands and created a great video ad that is catching on virally with us webheads. It’s a spoof on the new Old Spice commercial currently on the air. Whereas it’s message is why the school’s library is a great place to study, the message I get is….

Yum.

Um . . . what were you saying again?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SingleMindedWomen.com Names Boston as the Top City for Singleistas

-Women Can Now Look for Love and Money in all the Right Places-

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. (January 20, 2010)—Boston has been named the top U.S. city for single women, according to a story released today citing the best 10 cities for singleistas by SingleMindedWomen.com, the largest online news source for fabulously solo females. The nation’s capital takes second place while New York, Seattle, and Philadelphia round out the top five. This is the first comprehensive analysis conducted by SingleMindedWomen.com.

“Single women now have in-depth information they can use to make decisions about where to live to further their careers and lead more fulfilling personal lives,” says Paula Santonocito, SingleMindedwomen.com career editor and author of the story. “All the cities on our list offer tremendous possibilities. Some cities are obvious, like New York, known for an extremely vibrant business and social scene. But other cities, like Philadelphia, where 33 percent of the population is single, housing is affordable, and there is a wide range of career opportunities, are fabulous as well.”

Why Beantown

For single women, Boston has it all. The city is home to publishing houses, high-tech research, a growing biotech industry, heath care facilities, and many large financial firms, making it a dynamic city for career opportunities. With a reasonable cost of living, numerous cultural attractions, and great nightlife, Boston is a single gal’s dream city. While the city does have slightly more women than men, approximately 52 percent to 48 percent, approximately 33 percent of the population is single. Add to the mix the fact that Boston singles tend to be educated and career-minded, and it’s a winning formula, one that earned Boston SingleMindedWomen.com’s 2010 Top City status.

The Singleista Methodology

SingleMindedWomen.com analyzed major U.S. cities with an emphasis on the criteria its readers find most important: employment opportunities; cost of living; access to travel; entertainment options; social opportunities; ratio of women to men; singles population; and health/wellness lifestyle factors.

With career focus the ultimate factor, any cities with an unemployment rate above the national average of 10 percent, when research was conducted in October 2009, was disqualified. This immediately left out Chicago, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Atlanta, among other cities. Career opportunities, particularly in the current economic climate, weighed heavily; therefore, industries and potential employers were also examined.

Since singleistas love to travel, to earn a spot in the Top 10, an international airport was a requirement.

SingleMindedWomen.com compared cost of living, using New York City as the benchmark. Percentage of singles to the general population, as well as ratio of women to men, was then analyzed. In addition, the site explored venues for social activities, arts, sports, and other entertainment. SingleMindedWomen.com also looked at cities from the standpoint of healthy living, with good health taking into account body, mind, and spirit. Finally, analysis considered other aspects of lifestyle, such as aesthetics, personal style, and community support.

Top Cities 6-10

Some surprise cities round out the Top 10, with Pittsburgh taking the eighth spot, nestled between Denver in seventh place, and Dallas ranking ninth. Pittsburgh, the former steel town, has evolved into a bustling center of commerce and has become quite cosmopolitan in the process, much to a singleista’s delight. Phoenix takes sixth place, and music-hub Austin, which is a great city for younger singles, comes in tenth.

This month on SingleMindedWomen.com, readers will learn the top tips for successful holiday travel. Also in November, Setting a Budget for Holiday Gift-Giving, Navigating Office Politics and Adult “Sexting.”

Nov 09, 2009 – Paradise Valley, Ariz. – This month on SingleMindedWomen.com, the largest online news destination for singleistas, readers will learn the top tips for successful holiday travel from Escapes Editor Melanie Nayer. Whether it’s how to best navigate crowded airports, vacation bargain hunting and surviving long road trips with the kids, readers will learn how to brave the holiday travel season successfully.

For those flying over the Thanksgiving holiday, Nayer suggest being flexible with travel dates. Some of the larger airlines (US Air, United, Delta and Continental) are charging an extra $10 for holiday fares, but if travelers can leave a few days before Thanksgiving (Sun-Tuesday), you can avoid some extra charges, and a lot of extra chaos at the airport.

Some quick tips for holiday travel:

For Singles: Pack light, Ladies. The easiest way to get through security this holiday season is to bring next to nothing. Mix-and-match outfits are your best accessory. Hint: Banana Republic has some great non-wrinkle black dresses for under $100 that travel well, and can be worn during the day or for a nice night out.

For Parents: There’s nothing wrong with a little bribe. What’s more stressful than making your way through airport security with the kids in tow mid-meltdown? Keeping the kids from kicking the back of the airplane seat during the coast-to-coast flight. Have a new toy, new book, or ‘surprise’ in one of your carry-ons to keep kids occupied and excited for the flight.

Involve the kids on holiday travel planning: If you’re prepping for a road trip to Grandma’s house this holiday season, let the kids help plan the trip. Assigning ‘projects’ keeps them involved and excited for the long car ride. In addition, let them each choose one car game that they want, and can only be opened once you’re on your way. It will get the kids pumped for the ride, and keep them busy.

Also featured in November on SingleMindedWomen.com, just in time for Black Friday, readers can get tips on setting a budget for holiday shopping. Think heart not head, when it comes to gift giving, says SingleMindedWomen.com’s money maven, Martin Brown. Give from a place of love, Brown says. The amount of money put toward a gift is not as powerful a factor as the simple expression of caring.

Paradise Valley, Ariz. – May 20, 2009 – SingleMindedWomen.com (SMW), the leading online destination for single women 25 to 55 years of age, has entered into a partnership with FlexJobs, the best resource for telecommuting and online jobs, in order to provide its growing audience of single women with a job search tool. The partnership arrangement gives SMW’s growing audience access to FlexJobs at a discount.

Single women can now explore a wide range of freelance, contract, part-time, and full-time positions at FlexJobs.

“Single women and other people seeking career opportunities shouldn’t limit themselves to traditional employment. Today there are a surprising number of flexible work arrangements, in a variety of fields,” says Paula Santonocito, career editor of SingleMindedWomen.com.

FlexJobs saves job seekers time, and, most important, all jobs at the site are hand-screened and legitimate.

“We’re pleased to partner with FlexJobs so that single-minded women have access to such a terrific, high-quality resource,” says Allison O’Connor, co-founder of SingleMindedWomen.com.

Single women are career-minded women. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, single women represent 54 percent of all women in the workforce.

This majority of the female workforce often has challenges different from married women. A report released last summer by the Democratic staff of the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress, for example, finds one-quarter of all children are raised by single mothers. For this group, flexible work arrangements can be especially appealing.

SingleMindedWomen.com addresses the career concerns of single women, as well as health, money, relationships, family, and other issues of importance, often exploring how these issues overlap.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Phoenix, Ariz. (November 3, 2008) –Abandoned and neglected children have a new advocate in their corner. Online women’s lifestyle magazine SingleMindedWomen.com has teamed up with noted widowed parenting blogger Matt Logelin and his family to create a charity gift registry via Amazon.com that will dispense donated items to American children in need.

Using the online gift registry, charitable givers can purchase essential items like clothing, books, art supplies, and toys, which will be forwarded on to the My Stuff Bags Foundation. Based in California, this non-profit organization provides abused, abandoned, and neglected children—ranging in age from newborn to 18 years old—throughout the United States with personal belongings to help fulfill their needs and lend a sense of comfort as they are shepherded through the foster care system. The My Stuff Bags Foundation estimates that more than 300,000 children each year are removed from dangerous home environments, and it is their mission to provide each of these children with a bag filled with donated goods.

For blogger Matt Logelin, whose writing can be found at MattLogelin.com and SingleMindedWomen.com, My Stuff Bags Foundation’s cause is an important one. Matt’s wife, Liz, passed away from a pulmonary embolism within 27 hours of giving birth to their daughter Madeline. As a newly widowed single father, Matt takes comfort in being able to offer a helping hand to children who, for whatever reason, has been separated from the parents.

Matt’s relationship with SingleMindedWomen.com, for which he contributes as a guest blogger, helped lay the groundwork for the development of a joint charity gift registry. The site has a reputation for supporting charitable organizations—including Arizona’s Homeward Bound, which aids children affected by domestic violence and homelessness—and was thrilled to partner with Matt for this important cause.

To view the charity gift registry, please visit http://singlemindedwomen.com/womensfamily/657/matt-liz-and-madeline-logelin-charity-gift-registry-.html. Additional information on the My Stuff Bags Foundation can be found at MyStuffBags.org.

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. (November 3, 2008) Fresh out of beta testing since March 2008, SingleMindedWomen.com (SMW), an online web community devoted exclusively to the needs of fabulously unattached women, has helped to dispel the spinster stereotype, welcoming 25,000 single gal visitors per month.

The site provides a place to support and honor a women’s single lifestyle choice within a trusted community where women share their views, find inspirational ideas and discover ways to enhance “single life” with topics ranging from travel, health, careers, dating, finances and parenting.

Founded by 20-year publishing veteran, Allison O’Connor, who had the same experiences many single women face today — cracking the “old boys” network at work, buying a house on her own, traveling solo both for fun and business, investing for her own retirement, and even having a baby as a single woman, the site seeks to inform as well as entertain, single women like her, and younger ones learning as they go.

“The picture painted about single women is that we’re either like Carrie Bradshaw or we’re spinsters, leading these bleak lives,” says O’Connor. “We’re not spinsters; we’re ‘singleistas.’ The truth is there is an estimated 54 million single women living in the U.S today. These women are empowered, both emotionally and financially. I wanted to create a portal so that this demographic can feel its needs are being served.”

Offering different channels, ranging from career to style along with a fully-developed community feature, SMW boasts a team of respected editors and advisors including John Gray and Dr. Keith Ablow.

She is also the editor of John Gray’s Mars Venus Advice, Dr. Gray’s internationally syndicated question-and-answer columns; and co-author, along with her husband, Martin, of Marriage Confidential: 102 Honest Answers to the Questions Every Husband Wants to Ask, and Every Wife Needs to Know [Signal Press].

Josie’s husband Martin Brown edits the Money and Health channels. Brown’s a former CBS Radio Network news journalist whose articles on relationships have appeared in Playboy as affluentmale.com, askmen.com and AOL Women’s Network.

Business journalist Paula Santonocito edits the Careers channel and covers a wide range of employment issues. Santonocito is the author of nearly 1,000 articles that are featured in many global and domestic publications.

For single parents who need ideas of fun things to do with kids or other parenting issues visit Melissa Chapman, editor of the Single Moms channel. Chapman a New York City writer, editor and columnist has over ten years experience writing, editing and researching articles on parenting and pop culture. She also writes “Kids in the City,” a weekly column for The Staten Island Advance and is a contributing blogger at NYC Moms and iVillage.

For the fashion-forward, Erin Donnelly hosts the Style channel. Erin has also written for WWD Scoop, Bust, Tango, Rave*SQ, Upscale and Red Nightlife.

Food editor Fabiana Santana’s a freelance food writer, editor, and recipe tester & developer based in New York City. She is a graduate of the French Culinary Institute and Culinary Technique program and has worked as a writer and recipe taster for Family Circle, Profile Magazine, Shecky’s, Julib.com and Time Out NY.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Paradise Valley, AZ – September 30, 2008 – SingleMindedWomen.com (SMW), the leading online destination for single women 25 to 55 years of age, this fall will launch its first annual “SMW Certified” program, an award process and employer designation for organizations that meet SingleMindedWomen.com’s criteria as a single-women friendly company.

In order to be considered for this honor, employers must complete a survey document, answering questions about flexible work arrangements, work-life benefits, family-friendly benefits, mentoring, networking, and advancement opportunities for women.

Should an employer be deemed SMW Certified, SingleMindedWomen.com will include the company in a list of employer-of-choice organizations on the lead page of its Career channel. Each employer name will link to that employer’s careers website.

Employers will also receive an SMW Certified seal, a widget, which they can proudly display at their corporate careers site and use when they post open positions at job boards.

There is no charge for the opportunity to qualify as a SingleMindedWomen.com employer-of-choice, and, should an organization meet the criteria, no charge for inclusion in the site’s annual list or for the SMW Certified seal, which includes the award year.

“SMW certification offers each qualifying employer an online vehicle for promoting itself as a single-women friendly organization. Meanwhile, for career-minded single women, the certification will serve as confirmation that the employer provides the support they seek,” says Paula Santonocito, career editor of SingleMindedwomen.com.

The annual application process will begin October 1, 2008. All applications must be submitted by November 14, 2008.

Separately, SingleMindedWomen.com is offering employers an opportunity to increase exposure to the site’s rapidly growing audience of career-minded professionals.

This fall, it will launch a new website career tool called SMW CareerTalk.

SMW CareerTalk will provide employers with an opportunity to literally talk about their organizations in the context of career opportunities for single women. Participating employers will be interviewed and these interviews will be shared via podcasts and/or video on SingleMindedWomen.com’s Career channel.

“We are pleased to offer employers this Web 2.0 advertising opportunity on SingleMindedWomen.com’s Career channel. Employers that have a lot to offer single women now have a way to reach out to these job seekers. Meanwhile, for the women themselves, SMW CareerTalk is a great career search tool that will help them make better employment decisions,” says Allison O’Connor, co-founder of SingleMindedWomen.com.

Single women represent 54 percent of all women in the workforce, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data. This majority of the female workforce often has challenges different from married women. A report released this summer by the Democratic staff of the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress, for example, finds one-quarter of all children are raised by single mothers.

SingleMindedWomen.com addresses the career concerns of single women, as well as health, money, relationships, family, and other issues of importance, often exploring how these issues overlap.

Spurred by research showing that approximately 18% of the nearly 47 million uninsured Americans are single women, SingleMindedWomen.com has developed a comprehensive discount program to provide its members with access to affordable treatments and prescriptions.

And the plan isn’t limited to single women alone; all members of SingleMindedWomen.com—single, married, male, female—will have the opportunity to enroll in the plan and receive the SMW discounted rates.

“We see our readers as more than just site traffic,” says the site’s co-founder, Allison O’Connor. “Our goal has always been to foster community not only for single women but for anyone with an interest in women’s issues, and protecting that community by providing access to cost-conscious healthcare—especially at a time when costs are skyrocketing—is a tremendous step towards achieving that.”

Highlights of the Single Minded Women Healthcare Program Include:

Health Matter International RX Discount Program: Including diabetic supplies, over-the-counter medications and pet meds.
Members can start saving money on more than 11,000 prescription drugs from FDA-approved U.S., Canada and other international manufacturing sources. Guaranteed acceptance, no age or pre-existing condition limitations. Supplies from 30 to 90 days. No enrollment fee
