DIY Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe

Others know the season has arrived when the chalkboard at Starbucks says that the Pumpkin Spice Latte has arrived.  Nothing beats that first sip of spicy goodness. Nothing except getting it for free, because, let’s face it, at roughly $4 bucks a pop, the PSL is an expensive habit to give in to. Especially with holiday season right around the corner.  So, we’ve come up with the perfect DIY recipe so you can give into your guilty pleasure without giving up the funds.

Pumpkin Spice Latte

Makes 1 to 2 servings

2 cups milk
2 tablespoons canned pumpkin OR 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie syrup
1 to 2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, plus more to garnish
1 to 2 shots espresso, or 1/2 cup of strong black coffee

Whipped cream, to garnish

In a saucepan whisk together milk, pumpkin and sugar and cook on medium heat, stirring, until steaming. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla and spice and whisk well until slightly frothy. You can use a blender if you prefer.

Add mixture to a mug and top with coffee. Garnish with whipped cream and sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Syrup


1 1/2 cups sugar

1 1/2 cups water

3 tablespoons canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)

1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons pumpkin pie spice

In 2-quart saucepan, stir together sugar and water. Cook until sugar is dissolved (do not boil).
Beat in pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice with whisk. Cook (do not boil) 5 minutes longer.
Remove from heat. Cool at least 30 minutes. Pour syrup into bottle, jar or storage container. Store in refrigerator for up to two weeks. Makes 24 servings.
