Creating Healthy Self Esteem: Beauty’s Secret
By Allison O'Connor
The other day a book arrived at my office by author Debra Gano called Beauty’s Secret. Before I could read the book jacket, my 8-year old daughter walked in an assumed the book was for her. That was the last I saw of it, but boy did I hear about it. Not only did this book win rave reviews from my daughther, but she brought it to school the next day where it was passed around to her classmates.
Her teacher thanked me for sharing a book that promoted the value of inner beauty, a trait often over looked by society.
Moms, if you want to instill in your young girls healthy self-esteem, please read the excerpt below. Beauty’s Secret is beautifully written so that even a 7-year old can understand and enjoy.
SMW recommends that you add this book to your holiday and birthday list for that special young girl in your life.
Self-esteem building and inspirational, this first volume in the new empowering Heartlight Girls series brings awareness of inner beauty and true worth through a contemporary fairytale of a girl named Beauty. Written by former international model and actress Debra Gano, Beauty’s Secret is the Mom’s Choice Awards Gold Winner, the USA Book News ‘National Best Books’ Children’s Fiction First Place Winner, the Moonbeam Silver Medal Winner, and selected as Best Children’s Book of the Year by the Coalition of Visionary Resources. It’s also endorsed by Chicken Soup for the Soul co-author Jack Canfield as “A book every girl should read for healthy self-esteem.”
Frightened, Beauty ran out of the house and down the hill to the beach she had known so well since she was a little girl. There she dropped to her knees, buried her head in her hands, and cried.
Beauty had always loved the beach, for it was a special place for her, especially at this time of day.
The sun was just beginning its evening set and cast a rainbow of colors across the sky. The golden sunbeams created glistening sparkles on the water that danced with the rhythmic movement of the gentle waves. The tranquility that takes place at sunset, when the activities of the day subside, thins the veil that separates this world from the one of magic.
Yet on this day, with her head in her hands, Beauty never even noticed the grandeur that surrounded her.
Suddenly, the sun’s rays intensified and the waters calmed. Slowly, Beauty looked up. Squinting through her tears, she saw the glowing figure of a woman walking toward her, seemingly out of nowhere. The woman’s dress looked like white translucent light, with sparkling golden rays that were magnified by the brilliance of the setting sun. The dress glistened and billowed softly in the wind. The woman’s long hair flowed, and around her neck she wore a heart pendant.
As this mystical woman came closer, Beauty could feel the love and kindness she radiated, and sensed a familiar quality about her. Then it occurred to Beauty…this was the woman from her dream!
Peacefulness flooded Beauty and she knew this woman as a friend. She instantly felt comfortable confiding in her.
“I’m an awful, ugly person!” Beauty blurted, as raindrop tears streamed down her face. “I don’t feel like me anymore! What’s happened to me?”
“You have forgotten who you are, my dear.” The woman stopped in front of Beauty. “That is why I am here.”
“Who are you?” Beauty looked up at the mysterious woman and blinked back her tears.
