Duchess Digest: My Special Valentine
By Jill Brown
In case you’ve been living under a rock, let me inform you that there is a holiday coming up this week; Valentine’s Day. This is a very polarizing holiday that either leaves you feeling very special, or pretty rotten, largely depending on your relationship status. Many single women feel overlooked, unimportant and otherwise take a nice blow to their self-confidence on Valentine’s Day.
Take a tip from the Duchess Guide and whenever you feel self-doubt or sadness coming in, look out! What do I mean? Look out to people you can help. Valentine’s Day is hard on a lot of people, how can you spread some love and kindness outside your own temporary reality? Who can you help? Who is special in your life that you can take the time to tell just how much they mean to you?
There is one such person in my life that I just can’t say, “I love you,” to enough: my Nana. Every year, my Nana and Bunka (that’s our family’s name for my grandpa) send their grandkids a Valentine and a $2.00 bill. It’s been happening since grade school and I have a collection of them stored away. I love this tradition. And I love my Nana. She is the epitome of a woman to me. She works hard, she’s smart, she’s beautiful and feisty, she loves her children, she stands by her husband and family; in a word, my Nana is, awesome. In the truest sense of the word because she is awe inspiring. Recently, my Nana turned 80 and my whole family had the opportunity to gather from all around the country to celebrate and share with her just how much we love her. It was a really great experience to show gratitude for an amazing woman in my life.
Maybe this year, for Valentine’s Day, you can take the time to recognize the special Valentine in your life. It’s always best to look out and see how you can bless and enrich other’s lives. “As within, so without,” as the saying goes, so if you would have love and appreciation in your life this Valentine’s Day, why not be the one to share it with someone else instead of waiting for it to come to you?
Love comes in all shapes, sizes and forms – I hope you celebrate your special relationships with an important person in your life for V-day this year!
