Duchess Digest: Are these really REAL Housewives?
By -Jill Brown
As a writer, one of my biggest dreams is that one of two things will happen to me; 1) I will get my own Bravo Reality TV Show and 2) I will have some amazing major Publishing house Editor-in-chief stumble across this column or my blog and offer me some fabulous book deal which evolves into my own HBO series or movie (a’la Julie and Julia Style). Yeah, so I’m crazy, but we all have dreams right?
Being on vacation this past week I have sunk into the deepest depths of relaxation, family time, rest and yes, sadly Bravo Reality TV. I said I wanted to HAVE my own show not watch the, The Real Housewives of New York. But now I’m hooked and I can’t stop watching! However it’s not because I’m mesmerized by the topics (although I am in love with many of the fashions, jewelry, events and apartments of these women). Rather it’s because it makes me a little sad that we haven’t come any further than this as women. Granted, it’s a reality show, so bitchiness and cattiness go a long way (just look at the ratings for The Real Housewives of New Jersey) but even then – what are they fighting for?
I’ve just watched an episode in which Jill took a phone call from Bethenny on speaker setting so that Luann could overhear the whole conversation. No I’m not describing a scripted episode of the teen sensation Gossip Girl, this was a real event. It seems so junior high and shallow for such great women to sink to these childish antics.
Luann is a stunningly beautiful countess and mother. Jill is crazy successful, sassy and pretty devoted wife and mother. Bethenny is the skinny, successful, intelligent, impeccably dressed owner and author of the ‘Naturally Thin’ books and brand. They’re each so uniquely beautiful, so incredibly talented and so incredibly blessed – can’t they all just get along?
Obviously we don’t know all the behind-the-scenes details, but all I can say is – these women can be doing so much more for setting great examples for successful, happy, single minded women everywhere. They’re role models, I just hope it’s for kindness, understanding and honesty as a community of powerful women; and not the stereotypical cat fights, tabloid rumors and nonsense of shallow behavior.
Sadly, when I see these shows I think, if this is what being a REAL housewife will mean, I’ve never been happier being single!
