Top 10 Single Minded Women of 2010: #9 Jane Smiley
By SMW Staff
Jane Smiley, Pulitzer Prize-winning author for her 1991 novel A Thousand Acres, again shook the literary world with a new masterwork, Private Life [Knopf], which was selected as one of the most noteworthy books of 2010 by many media outlets, including Atlantic Monthly.
According to Booklist, A Private Life “offers a cold-eyed view of the compromises required by marriage while also providing an intimate portrait of life in the Midwest and West during the years 1883-1942”, and it is heralded as “a subtle and thoughtful portrayal of a woman’s inner strength” by Library Journal.
In a field that has long been dominated by men, this American writer continues to distinguish herself with works of literature that are both sweeping scope and beautifully crafted as works of fiction. In her thirteen novels and four non-fiction books, Smiley is a case study in the creative force of a woman with both purpose and voice.
