By SMW Staff

OprahAlways the risk taker, Oprah Winfrey overcame a life of poverty to become one of the most revered women of her generation.

Besides heading a media conglomerate that produces her syndicated talk show along with others (Dr. Oz, The Rachael Ray Show, The Dr. Phil Show), two magazines, radio and  internet networks, feature films and television movies,Winfrey is recognized as the richest African American in the world, the only black billionaire in the world, and the greatest African American philanthropist in history.

Winfrey has long made a difference in the lives of countless of millions of her fans: not just with the quality of her ideas, but for the courage of her personal back story, which included not only poverty, but sexual abuse and teen pregnancy as well:  her baby soon died after childbirth.

2011 is the beginning of a new chapter for Winfrey: she will end her syndicated talk show after this television season, and at the same time move boldly ahead with OWN — the Oprah Winfrey Network, which began broadcasting on January 1, 2011.

By doing so, Oprah is rolling the dice on a massive undertaking. We’re betting that this is one woman with the savvy and power to pull it off.
