Top 10 Single Minded Women of 2010: #2 Sonia Sotomayor
By SMW Staff
U.S. Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor is the very definition of the great American story. Raised in New York City by a widowed mother she began her service as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court in the late 2009.
As one of only 112 Americans to serve as a justice on the court, she is also its first Hispanic member.
A child of the 1950s she was impressed by the strong willed fictional girl detective Nancy Drew and dreamed of being a judge while watching Perry Mason mysteries. Growing up in a South Bronx housing project her mother set one goal for her two children, that they get a good education and have successful careers. Her determination paid off with Sonia winning a full scholarship to Princeton and her younger brother, Juan, becoming a physician and university professor in Syracuse, New York.
