Top 10 Single Minded Women of 2010: #3 Elizabeth Edwards
By SMW Staff
The national spotlight fell most brightly upon her when, after losing the Democratic primary, her husband was picked as Massachusetts Senator John Kerry’s running mate for the United States Presidency.
The nation liked what they saw in the hard fighting woman, who pushed willfully beyond the the tragic loss of her teenage son in an auto accident, the recurrence of breast cancer during John’s second run at the Presidency in 2008; and later in 2009, the shocking revelations of her husband’s extra marital affair, and his child out of wedlock with his mistress.
Not one to follow the lead of other cuckolded politicians’ wives and stand by her man, in early 2010 Elizabeth divorced John, and in spite of the spread of her cancer, continued to speak loudly and clearly for the causes she was passionate about: universal health care, and gay marriage.
The day before she died she posted this final message on Facebook: “The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that. And, yes, there are certainly times when we aren’t able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It’s called being human.”
By December 7, 2010, when she had lost her long battle with breast cancer, she was already recognized throughout the world as a woman of courage, character and class.
