Women’s History Month: Living Your Ideal Vision

By Jill Brown

vanessa summers head shotEarlier this month I challenged you to nominate the ‘real’ woman in your life who was your ideal of ‘having it all’ for Woman’s History Month. It was an experience I was looking forward to being a part of in many ways.

After searching through all your entries (many thanks for all the great submissions) I came across one entry whose nominator was so passionate about her ‘real woman role model’ and whose nominee was so perfect for this article that she simply HAD to be our Single Minded Woman of the month.

Single Minded Ladies, I am pleased to introduce you to the fabulous, talented and truly inspiring Vanessa Summers.

Vanessa is a stand-out role model amongst role models. She is an incredibly successful entrepreneur (think multi-million dollar company built from the ground-up), a financial expert (think profiled on major television networks CBS, NBC and CNBC), published author (of not one or two, but three books including; Get in the Game!: The Girl’s Guide to
Money and Investing
and Buying Solo: The Single Woman’s Guide to Buying a First Home), superstar coach and leader (her nomination came from a client; would you nominate any of your business leaders? Or better yet, would your clients or employees nominate you?) and amazing wife and mother. If ever a definition of ‘having it all’ existed, Vanessa is it!

But this is where synchronicity gets exciting! When I went to Vanessa’s website (www.vanessasummers.com) to read more on her bio and company her motto perfectly phrased what I think all of us Single Minded Women would like to adopt as our motto and mantra – “live your ideal vision!”

I had the privilege of speaking with Vanessa this week and asked her what living HER ideal vision felt like; “I think for me it’s about being empowered. It’s about freedom to make choices, being healthy, having a family, an emotionally intimate partnership with your mate and a life of serving and connecting.”

Life may seem charmed from where Vanessa is siting, but she’s worked hard to get here and she’s been through many lifetimes already for such a young age. From ages nine to sixteen she was a tennis star, competing with greats like Jennifer Capriati. From sixteen to twenty-two she was a fashion model working alongside celebrities like Tyra Banks and Charlize Theron. At twenty-two she gave up modeling and became a stockbroker in Hong Kong, trading millions of dollars every day and learning her financial skills hands on. But don’t let that intimidate you, Vanessa is very candid that during this time she was really learning about how important mindset, self-confidence and mentors are for evolution. She openly shares that during these amazing accomplishments on three different continents, she was still seeing poor financial results, less than ideal relationships and the same life story playing out in her experience.

At twenty-six she decided to ‘get smart,’ as the phrase goes, and really start to change. She sought out incredible mentors who were not only talking the talk, but living it! She sought out the best and today she has achieved an amazing life of her own ideal vision.

After speaking with Vanessa personally, what really struck me is her sincerity and her complete self-assurance. She was refreshingly honest during our interview that life and growth can be messy. In telling me what her ideal vision meant to her she was sure to include, “There’s a messiness to it too! I know my ideal vision is also about taking responsibility, fulfilling my purpose and there is often a messy imperfectness to the days.” But she happily knows that the messiness is balanced, because life is also great these days! In addition to her amazing company, she has a wonderful life and business partner Andor and a truly adorable infant son Thor Andor, as well as two great little dachshunds.

If you’re wondering how you can have it all, Vanessa credits mentors as being a huge part of her success today. She says for every Single Minded Woman looking to live her ideal vision, you should start the quest now for mentors who are living the life you’re aspiring too, not just talking about it. I asked her about the role of mentors and she explained, “Be aware of the importance of female role models. Many of our mentors are men, and that’s great, but since we’re woman chances are good we’re looking for the success model of other women.” She also shared the importance of making things formal and securing both gratis and formalized (think hired) mentors. “Mentors are busy! So if you get the opportunity to work with one of your great mentors and make it formal, you should jump at the chance!” She also explained that as we change, evolve and grow our mentors will likely change; and that’s a good thing! It means we’ve grown! A mentors hindsight can be your foresight, so utilize that experience as you map out your own ideal life.

Yes, life is good and Vanessa is definitely in the fullness of being a female role model, a successful CEO and leading her delicious ideal vision every day.
