3 Quick Tips to Headturning Style!

By Catherine Cassidy

As mentioned last week, first impressions are everything. So, it’d better be a great one! More importantly, it better truly reflect you. This is the difference between someone approaching you (whether in a professional or a personal setting … ahem, dating!) or deciding not to because they’re unsure.

1)   Set the mood

If your personality shines through, you’ll attract the people to whom you want to and need to be connecting with for your personal and professional success. Trust me!

When you’re setting the mood, really think about your personality and how you’d want to reflect that through your personal style. This is the difference between bohemian, bohemian chic, classic, artsy, urban, etc. To get an idea of what resonates with you, I suggest going through fashion magazines and or store catalogs and pulling out what you like. You’ll notice a trend and you’ll get an idea of what you’re personally going for with your style.

2)   Consider your brand

Again, you’re reflecting your personality and message through your personal style. This includes the colors you wear, the accessories you choose, how you put together your outfits, etc.

For instance, wearing bright and fun colors instead of basic black and white. Or, always wearing a really cool pair of shoes/heels as your signature. Or, you love earrings or necklaces as jewelry, but they’re always one of a kind. Even you’re fine jewelry should fit your personality!

How do you layer – kind of funky with a vest or cool and sophisticated with a sweater? Do you layer your jewelry? Do you tend to keep it conservative, but always add at least one pop of color? Maybe you love your pearls with your cardigans and pencil skirts – I’d say your classic retro chic. Are you starting to get it?

One thing that you must always do is dress up – even if it’s just for yourself! Now, this can be as simple as a cool piece of jewelry with your basic tee and jeans, but it’s something that reflects your personality and style. Trust me, it will make you feel that much better about your look and thus you’ll stand a little straighter and walk a bit more confidently!

Colors are so important when it comes to your personal and professional branding. Colors can influence other people’s moods and perceptions of you, so you should consider this seriously. For a cheat to know your best color, think back to what color you are wearing when you’re constantly complimented. This is likely your best color. These are colors that make your complexion brighten and make you look refreshed as soon as you put them on.

I mentioned layering a bit earlier and this is a key way to show your style. Instead of just throwing on a shirt and a top, you’re looking at how to pull it all together to create a complete look. I coach clients to start with the one item in their closet  that they know they want to wear for the day. This will put a bit more pep in their step because they love this item. Then, it’s pulling out the rest of the outfit that completes it.  When pulling it together you must have the following:

  • A base – your top and bottom or dress
  • Add interest through layering – a sweater, a scarf, a belt, a vest, etc.
  • Play with Color combinations
  • Don’t be afraid to mix Textures/Fabrics
  • Be mindful of Silhouettes (you need to balance and/or create an hourglass)
  • Trends are great for inspiration, but not all should be followed!
  • Always keep in mind your purpose
    • Don’t want to be pulling at a skirt/dress all day, might need to be able to move well, etc.

3)   PLAY with clothes!

Don’t be afraid to try new things. You might not like something at first, but you’re opening your mind and your style creativity to new ideas. This is where you will really identify your style.

They might not feel right at first, but you need to see that they can work. And if you don’t buy into the look right away, you allow yourself to develop a taste or interest in it. That way you’re always dressing for yourself, but pushing it to the next level.  Remember, we’re kicking it up a notch here!

This means, if you usually wear dresses, you might add some great slacks or skirts into the mix. If you usually wear jeans, try skirts and dresses that you feel comfortable in as well. If a suit is your go-to, then play with ways to make the look more feminine and fun.

Also, you must play with color! This is my number rule with clients. Adding unexpected color into your wardrobe and outfit shows people that you’re not afraid to take risks (and look, they work!). Also, it impresses them that you’re so stylish to think of this!

Over time, you’ll start to have a vision in mind while getting ready. Sometimes the ideas don’t work, but as you develop the skill, you will get better and better at envisioning that perfect outfit (already in your closet!).

SIDENOTE: As you’re developing this skill, you should give yourself a bit of extra time to get ready in the morning. Over time, this will mean you will really only need a few minutes to get dressed. Trust me, that feeling is incredibly empowering!

If you really want to streamline your mornings and identify your style, you should set aside a chunk of time to simply play with all of your clothes (and accessories). Since you’re playing, no combination is off limits to try. And why not document the process so you can remember the fabulous outfits you created?
