Down in the Trenches

By Maggie Malach

This is my favorite time of year because I can finally shed my heavy winter coat in favor of a much lighter (and chicer) trench coat. This is a classic style that is being revived in a major way. Trenches comes in all lengths and colors, and at prices you can’t turn away. Here are some of my favorites for Spring 2011.

If you are looking for an investment coat, I love this one from Michael Kors. The tan color and classic style make it wearable for many, many years to come. The neutral fabric also allows you to have fun accessorizing — pair it with a pair of cute rainboots or a bright umbrella.

Those who want to be a little bolder in their trench of choice will love this stunning coat by Topshop. The colorful print definitely makes it a statement piece, and who doesn’t want to add a little excitement to a dreary day?

If you want a trench coat that is out of the ordinary, but not too wild, check out this one from Lauren by Ralph Lauren. Light pink is a flattering color on most women. Additionally, since it is a solid color, it’s easy to style it up with a scarf or fun purse. This coat will also carry well into cooler summer occasions.

A few style tips: these classic coats go well with all sorts of shoes; heels, rainboots, leather boots, and boat shoes can all work. The a-line cut of the coat adds a lot of volume, so try to stick with pants that have a straight cut throughout the leg.
