February Hot List

By Erin Donnelly

Outside the temperatures are frigid, but inside, the boutiques are all stocked with springtime sundresses. And since you’re not crazy enough to face the February frost in a floral mini-skirt, rely on this guide to find versatile, season-appropriate wardrobe pieces that will help you ease (not cannonball) into spring. From cold weather accessories to springtime trends, SMW is bringing you the best of both worlds.

The Perfect Trench: Get your inner Audrey Hepburn on with a timeless trench. Think belted, not baggy, with modern details like luxe fabric or jeweled embellishments. Catherine Malandrino’s black satin version (shown) is pure chic.

Brooches: Beat the winter blahs with a bit of eye-catching glitz. Pin a jeweled—but not garish—brooch onto your sweater, coat or hat for extra glamour. If you don’t have a special heirloom piece tucked away in your jewelry box, try the Antiquities Onyx Brooch from Dillard’s.

Red Nails: Fed up with your French manicure? Try a splash of red instead. Get the look with Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Chinoise Nail Polish.

pic2The Big Scarf: This is a must-have accessory piece as we transition into spring. Wear it as a shawl, or fold it in half and loop it around your neck for some added warmth. Our favorites: The Love Quotes Scarf in Bordeaux (shown), which features an inspirational quote and benefits international children’s charities, and Agnona’s sumptuous Silk & Cashmere Plisse Scarf.

Enamel Bracelets: Add some color to your outfit with a bold enamel bracelet—perfect for work and play. Kenneth Jay Lane’s Pyramid Bracelet (shown) straddles the line between preppy and exotic, and sports a blue and green pattern that’s just right for spring.

Bangs: Katie Holmes and Reese Witherspoon have done for bangs what Jennifer Aniston did for layers. Whether you go wispy, sideswept or chunky, bangs are a simple and stylish way to update your hairstyle for the season.

Tights: A thick pair of stockings—like Wolford’s Matte Opaque 80 Tights—will be your new best friend this month, offering you plenty of versatility. Wear a pair with your favorite dress, or pair a great top with a skirt and stockings instead of trousers. Note: Stick with tights, not leggings, which are working their way back to ’80s.

Cashmere: Cashmere is the perfect mid-to-late-winter element: soft, classic and warm but not stifling. Invest in a cashmere cardigan, sweater or long-sleeve tee (we love J. Crew’s V-neck version) for a wardrobe staple that will never go out of style.

pic4Equestrian Cap: Ready to ditch that bulky winter parka? The right accessories can help you stay nice and toasty until spring. Case in point: A chic and sophisticated equestrian-style cap, like Eugenia Kim’s Muffy Oversized Plaid Equestrian Cap, keeps your noggin warm, gives your outfit some polish, and saves the day when bad hair strikes.

Nautical Prints: Nautical details (think chain-link prints, lots of navy and white, military-style buttons, and rope trim) hit the high seas this season. Two to try: Banana Republic’s ¾-Sleeve Buttonless Chainlink-Print Cardigan (shown) and Juicy Couture’s Stripe Short Sleeve Cardigan.
