New & Improved FASHION Dictionary

By Catherine Cassidy

fashion dictionaryWhen working with clients, they’ve picked up on some phrases that I use pretty consistently (aside from a raised eyebrow and a crinkled nose if I don’t like something) and I realized that they put a whole new light on Fashion and Style. Yes, they make it more FUN!

I don’t know about you, but I’m over a shopping experience that is frustrating (not to mention unflattering – damn those lights!) and getting dressed in the morning that’s boring. Men must design those stores!

PLAY – Fashion should be fun, not intimidating. So, don’t take it so seriously. Play with clothes! Try new things – some won’t work, but most will surprise you!

WAISTED – Adding a waist to an outfit. For example, if you’re wearing something bulky or really flowing, you get waisted by adding a jacket or a belt to define your waist.

CREATE – Using the clothes you already have and/or your new favorite things, create a totally new look or a twist on an original outfit. Fashion is really a creative expression of you. Show yourself off to the world!

MIND YOUR SHAPE – I don’t care if you’re a size 0 or a size 20, minding your shape means you’re aware of your body type and dressing to flatter it. You’re not covering yourself up, you’re emphasizing your best assets.

BALANCING PROPORTION – Basically the Universal Law of Style. If you’re wearing something flowing or oversize on top, you need to keep it slim and fitted on bottom. And vice versa, if you’re wearing an A-line skirt or wide leg pants, you should compliment it with a fitted blouse.

HOURGLASS – What we all strive for. Also goes back to ‘Mind your Shape’ since knowing your body type and how to dress it will give you the ability to create the illusion of the elusively perfect hourglass shape.

TOOLS – Not the men you don’t want to talk to (who inevitably approach you!), but the repertoire of Fashion knowledge you’ve acquired through the process of educating yourself – whether by reading this blog, your Fashion magazines, or engaging the help of an expert to expedite the process – and how you put them to great use. With the right tools, you can create the perfect outfit for YOU each and every day!
