Tighten Your Tummy! 5 Smart Belly Busting TipsWhat comfortably hid beneath a snug winter sweater will soon be on display for all to see as the mean winds of winter give way to the gentle breezes of April and May.

And if spring is here, we’re just one heat spell away from having to show ourselves to the world, belly and all.

If you haven’t started to battle that winter bulge you’re probably ready for some quick tips to do that right now–so let’s get started…

Step One: Fast results start with a smart diet plan.

Cheese Doodles and French Fries do not a diet make. Come on girls you know the routine: lean meats, tuna, veggies, fruit. There are about a thousand good diet ideas at the click of a mouse. But whatever diet you choose, remember this one simple truth, if you eat fewer calories than you burn during the day, you will lose weight. Do the reverse and you’ll gain weight. So become aware of what’s getting passed your lips because when it comes to weight loss, your mouth is your first line of defense.

Step Two: Be smart about the rate at which you drop those extra pounds.

You know you didn’t put on 15 extra pounds in three days, so don’t try to take them off in 72-hours. You can aggressively, but safely, drop three pounds a week. Start now and before the middle of May you’ll reach your magic number. And if what you want to lose is 18 pounds or more, you may not be at your ideal weight come Memorial Day, but you’ll be very well on your way. Bottom line: Get going now.

Step Three: Starting with cardio is the smart way to get that belly in shape.

So many of us start with sit-ups and other exercises that focus directly on the stomach. And that would be wrong, because the first thing you want to do is rid yourself of the layer of fat that has comfortably taken up residence between your abdominal muscles and your outer skin. You attack that fat with jogging, biking, swimming, tennis, etc.

Step Four: Smart gals know that beautiful bellies are toned bellies.

Once that fat has been burned off with four or five weeks worth of diet and cardio, you’re ready to tone up that tummy. That means, stability ball exercises, sit-ups, crunches, and more. Under the search words “core-conditioning” you can find about a thousand suggested exercises for your abs online.

Step Five: Play smart this year and stay fit.

The post winter drill is a great way to get back in shape, but with each passing year that can get tougher and tougher to do. Trust me, you don’t want to try to prove me wrong on this. We’re all bound to put on a few extra pounds over the winter, but doing a weekly weigh-in, even while the snow is falling outside, helps to remind us that the day will soon come when we want to get down to swimsuit weight all over again. So try to keep winter bulge within a five pound range and next spring’s belly busting season won’t be nearly so hard.
