Q&A: Eco-Conscious Fashion
By Erin Donnelly,  updated 3/14/2008 at 7:34:05 PM

Q: Everyone's talking about how great eco-conscious clothing is, but a lot of the stuff I've seen seems either too basic or bohemian for my tastes. Can you recommend some organic styles that look a bit more modern and dressier?

A: Of course I can! You'll be happy to know that sustainable fashion has come a long way from Birkenstocks and ugly hemp skirts. And while a lot of what you may see is somewhat basic-looking casualwear (organic cotton and bamboo are great for tees and yoga pants), there are plenty of garments out there that are as stylish and fashion-forward as they are green-minded. Hey, tree-huggers can be trendy too!

Go green and glam in these chic sustainable styles:

Toggery Sophia Wrap Dress (shown): Every woman needs a black wrap dress, so why not make yours eco-friendly? This versatile winner is made from bamboo.

Edun Twilight High Waist Organic Stretch Cotton Jeans (shown): Yep, even your baby blues can go green. The high rise and wide legs of these organic cotton jeans are right on the money trend-wise, while the embroidered leaf details on the back pocket send a little shout-out to Mother Nature.

Organic Highwaisted Skirt (shown, below): This sleek and sustainable pencil skirt can be worn with a blazer for the workday, or paired with a sexy sleeveless blouse—like the pretty Embroidered Top shown here—for date night.

Melissa Desire + Triton Heels (shown): These darling Brazilian-made heels—also available in cherry red—are completely guilt-free, and not simply because of the bargain $68 price. The MELFLEX material is hypoallergenic and recyclable, and the Melissa brand is known for their socially responsible practices.

Song Organic Ruffle-Trim Dress: Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee in this beautifully wispy dress made from organic ramie. Available in black or white.

Natalie Portman for Te Casan Paloma Heel: So long, leather! Vegan actress Natalie Portman's animal-free footwear line for Te Casan is selling fast, and with shoes like this stunning criss-cross satin heel (available in black, red or gold), it's easy to see why.

Beau Soleil Beau Wrap: This black bamboo dress sports a lower scoop-neck and a detachable recycled leather belt for a hip, confident look.
